Novel Artworks

The individual pages of all three books were created from the original collages that make up the "Novel Artworks" series of triptych pieces. This means the text runs over and in between the different motifs. To fit the words in, the text is arranged into 3 columns per page and all indentation for paragraphs etc., are removed. Running underneath and in between the main texts are abridged versions.

This is a unique but accessible way to consume text. As with the other two novels, the  the motifs were hand-cut from printed coloured papers and arranged by Steve during several months of painstaking application (!).

History

Social Wallpaper was begun in 1997, Fireworks in 2001 and The Airplane in 2016.

Blurbs

Social Wallpaper: This is a fast-paced psychological thriller who-done-it love triangle thing. There are brothers. Exotic Greek islands. Poison. Revenge. Japanese swords. And the mother of all cover-ups.

Fireworks: Dennis is being exploded, but he doesn't know it yet. He hasn't got much time. A fraction of a fraction of a second, in fact. Can he somehow make sense of his life? From being a boy evacuated from pre-war Nazi Germany to being a philosophy lecturer on the cusp of an incredible world-altering discovery...

The Airplane: This is a comedy coming-of-age sci-fi (ish) ghost story terror plot family saga thing. There are anti-hero alcoholics, anxiety-riddled heroines and an old cop just trying to save the world. What could possibly go wrong?

Themes

"Novel Artworks" are largely about challenging the notion of linear time. Showing everything "all at once". In an eternal singular moment. All three of Steve's novels explore this idea in their own way.

In Social Wallpaper, events in different locations which occurred at different times are mixed together. The same events are also experienced from different characters' perspectives. In Fireworks, every takes place from the moment a bomb is detonated until the force of the detonation takes effect. In The Airplane, there are "time windows" where past and future events can be witnessed and in the case of future events, potentially altered.
